Afferon Corporation

Afferon Corporation is a privately held pharmaceutical company building a specialty pharmaceutical business focused on urology. Afferon's lead product, resiniferatoxin (RTX), targets urinary urge incontinence, a major under-served market. Licensed from the National Institutes of Health, RTX is a potent neuronal desensitizing agent with a number of potential indications. Resiniferatoxin is one of a family of compounds called vanilloids that act by desensitizing overactive afferent (sensory) neurons. Afferent neurons in the urinary bladder are responsible for the micturition reflex. Afferon has exclusive rights to RTX and related compounds. Several patents on composition and use of these compounds have been issued in the U.S., Europe, and Japan; others are pending. Afferon's compounds are chemically related to capsaicin (CAP), the “hot” ingredient in chili peppers.
