Statens Serum Institut, Denmark (SSI) is the national centre for prevention and control of infectious diseases and congenital disorders in Denmark. The Institute was founded in 1902 and rapidly gained world-wide recognition for its contribution to immunisation research and its manufacture of high-quality products. Today, SSI is one of Europe's largest research centres in microbiology, immunology and epidemiology, and is a leading public health institute in the fields of registering, monitoring, advising and implementing programmes for infectious diseases. SSI is also a research-based manufacturing and service enterprise. The Institute's activities are both domestically and internationally oriented, with many countries benefitting from our research and development projects, as well as from our supply of vaccines and diagnostic media. The Institute's focus on research and quality has made it host to 6 international WHO centres, a WHOCare Distribution centre, and an adviser to national as well as international authorities and organisations. Extensive R&D has enabled SSI to gain a position as an exporter to more than 80 countries on all continents, and our international activities expand continuously.
