Tanox, Inc., with its European subsidiary, Tanox Pharma, B.V., is engaged in the discovery and development of therapeutic products that beneficially influence or are derived from the immune system. Tanox is focusing its product development efforts on therapeutics in three broad areas: immunology (asthma/allergy and autoimmune diseases), infectious diseases and oncology. At its Houston headquarters, Tanox has its core research and development laboratories and process development and production facilities. Tanox has additional discovery research laboratories in Amsterdam. Tanox currently has products under development in several areas. In a three-way collaboration among Tanox, Novartis and Genentech, rhuMab-E25 anti-IgE is in clinical development for the treatment of allergic rhinitis and allergic asthma. Phase III clinical studies in allergic rhinitis and asthma are completed and a BLA filing is anticipated in mid-2000. In the allergic rhinitis studies, E25 treatment resulted in a significant reduction in allergy symptoms, improved quality of life, and decreased use of other allergy drugs. Initial analysis of allergic asthma Phase III trials was positive and consistent with previous Phase II findings. In the Phase II trial, E25 treatment of patients with moderate-to-severe allergic asthma could reduce symptoms while decreasing, or even completely eliminating, the need for steroids. Tanox also has initiated a Phase I/II clinical trial to evaluate the ability of Hu-901, one of its own anti-IgE antibodies, to reduce the severity of reactions to peanuts in patients at risk for peanut induced anaphylaxis (PIA). For treatment of HIV infection, Tanox is developing a novel in-licensed antibody that targets the cellular receptor for HIV, CD4.
