POINT Biomedical is a privately held pharmaceutical company that is pursuing technologies related to imaging and drug delivery. The principal product platform is based on hollow, dual layer microspheres or bispheres. The inner shell provides physical integrity and protects the contents while the outer layer functions as the biological interface. The overall size distribution and the respective layers can be independently modified to fulfill application specific requirements. The bispheres can be filled with a gas, such as nitrogen or air, or designed to hold a variety of drugs or biotherapeutic agents, which can be released upon collapse of the bispheres under external control. The collapse of each bisphere can be monitored providing discrete feedback as to how much agent has reached the target site. Bispheres can be used to protect labile agents from premature degradation as well as alter the pharmacokinetics, metabolism and systemic toxicity of various chemotherapeutics.
